Abstract
Korea established the National Health Promotion Act in 1995, founded the HP2020 in 2002, ratified the FCTC in 2005, and subsequently amended the related Acts accordingly. Particularly, the following measures were implemented by the Korean government: designated all enclosed public areas smoke-free in 2012; raised the cigarette price in 2015; and began enforcing image-based cigarette package warnings in 2016. According to KNHANES, the prevalence of cigarette smoking (age-standardized) among male adults (¡Ã19 years) declined from 1998 (66.3%) to 2015 (39.3%). As per KYRBS, the prevalence of cigarette smoking among male adolescents (grades 7-12) declined from 2006 (16.0%) to 2016 (9.6%). These results may be due to the strengthening of the national tobacco control policy. The CDC will continue to monitor the prevalence of smoking and produce basic data for establishing a policy on tobacco control.
